Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

It is very likely that both infections and deaths are being significantly under-recorded in most parts of the world. One example of the latter: the town of Nembro in Italy would typically have ~35 deaths at this point in the year; they have recorded 158 deaths this year. But only 31 of those deaths have been attributed to COVID-19. Whether that’s due to cases being missed, people not being tested post mortem, people dying of other preventable causes due to hospitals being overwhelmed, increases in suicide...the direct and indirect effects seem quite significant in places where the outbreak is severe.

Because the Chinese government clamped down on doctors who first tried to warn about the outbreak, and because President Xi is an idiot.

I was focusing more on how the virus spreads, and how it appeared someone was implying the higher total numbers right now we're due to people staying home.

Who and how the fire started is important, and I think most of us are in agreement on that. But there is certainly less agreement on the best way to prevent it spreading now that its here.

Fauci compared this to the flu? In what way?

In the article they say the Fatality rate of Covid is about the same as a severe flu(0.1%). Basically tons of cases being missed. Considering the asymptomatic rate of 1 out of 2 up to 1 out of 10 and how we are testing, it's very likely. This obviously just has to ability to spread faster and overwhelm hospitals.

Yeah just imagine if we had been prepared and handled this in a way with massive testing. The amount if early data would have been huge in helping shape a response.
And what would be different had you had all of this massive early testing? You panic earlier? Tell people to stay at home earlier? We see how well thats working.

More science to back up the warm weather and summer months slowing the virus transmission. Deniers should take a gander...

I hope that's accurate. Could allow people to go outside and work while also giving scientists time to find drugs that help against the virus before the 2nd wave

Find this hard to believe considering it’s running rampant in Miami and the Keys since the beginning and they’ve been the warmest area of the country for months.

They were flooded with spring breakers not too long ago. It's not soooo far fetched to think that a lot of their initial cases, although it'd be hard to trace it to be certain, can be traced back to the Florida governor not kicking all of the spring breakers out ASAP. Some areas were shutting down a lot of things, but you had youngsters hanging out in Florida anyway for quite a while. (EDIT: And THEN you had New Yorkers fleeing New York as New York was going to shelter in place, although I don't think Florida has locked down, that has led to them placing police officers at the checkpoints to Florida, and they're making New York, Louisiana, and one other state license plates turn around now)

In fact, they apparently have multiple sick cruise ships heading towards them (so their number is only going to go up). The cruise ships are harder to explain outside of people carrying it while being asymptomatic and boarding those ships, along with others that may have had it boarding the ship and not known for a while because it sometimes takes a while to manifest, but even still.

Larry also posted something that suggests that this virus might decay in warmer weather and not go away relatively quicker.

All reasons to look to get the curve under control as soon as possible. I would like to see this theory tested.

When it comes to this, nobody is an expert. Nobody knows how many will die so why even make a prediction ?
You may be correct, this is unchartered territory. But it is his job to help lead the response to the pandemic and having an idea of infection rate and numbers is a critical part of that job. As a citizen, I prefer to be given the facts and not political speak. I sincerely hope he is wrong, and I’m sure he has the same hope.

Ive heard anywhere from 20,000 to 2 million could die. Thats quite a range.

In my opinion this is just irresponsible. No need to put out numbers. Let it play out. Nobody has any clue as to how many will die. To put out a number like that just causes more panic.

I bet if Dr Fauci said it would only kill 5-10k you would have linked the story yourself......

This is exactly what needs to be said by people like Dr Fauci, they are the experts, they understand more than anyone else the potential impacts this can have, if he says those numbers then you need to sit up and listen. Would you rather they lie and downplay it...we have had enough of that already....525 people died in the US yesterday that number goes up every single day.....

I wonder if he takes into account factors such as the weather having an impact on the virus.

I’m not going to be blunt. I’d like to be, but I won’t, no matter how much it pains me not to be. The man is the head of the National Institute of Allergens and Infectious Diseases. He has been since 1984. He has been at the forefront of US efforts to contend with viral diseases like HIV, SARS, the 2009 swine flu pandemic, MERS, and Ebola.

He is educated and quite smart. I’m pretty damn sure that he has taken into account any little thing that might pop into that know it all brain of yours. You don’t need to second guess what a man who is smarter than all of us about this disease has to say. You have a lot to learn. A wise man once told me in boot camp to keep my eyes and ears open and my mouth shut because where I stand at this moment means that I don’t know $hit from shinola. Heed that advice.

Can we cut this freaking crap out already? By this logic, there is no sense in discussing the virus, politics or weather unless you are an expert.

If you disagree, disagree but it's ridiculous the amount of teenage insults in a forum that is supposed to be adults.

Here's some perspective: In Forsyth County (N.C.), the current rate of infection is 1 out of every 11500 people; In NYC that number is 1 out of every 260.
Again, where are you seeing infection rates? I don’t think we have any widespread testing of the population. So we don’t know infection numbers. We have hospitalization and death numbers, though. Mortality is very low per million in the US.

I never professed to be an adult. Maybe in body, but certainly not in actions or thoughts.

Dr Fauci also said the Presidents early restrictions saved many lives. What did you do? Instead of agreeing with this brilliant man you started posting crap you found online trying to downplay it.

We all know that there are under reported cases. But still, the rate of infection is much higher in a place such as NYC compared to Forsyth County. That’s all I was saying.

This thread has become an absolute mess. I agree with @tramadoc and @Downeastnc. All they are doing is simply quoting the experts. It's apparent that this has become a thread of insults and political division. It's okay to discuss, but when you literally try to start an argument over anything you don't happen to agree with, it's like damn WWIII up in here.

Do you even bother to read someone's post before posting mindless bull crap? He literally quoted AND agreed w/ Fauci.

You need some serious help.
